5 RHYTHMS

All Levels

5Rhythms are: Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical, Stillness
The 5 Rhythms is a moving meditation created by Gabrielle Roth in the 1960’s. It follows in the tradition of various forms of trance and ecstatic dance modalities, and is a modality within itself. The practice explores the concept that “life is energy in motion”; everything moves in and out of waves of motion throughout its lifespan. The 5 Rhythms in sequence make up a wave. They are: flowing, staccato, chaos, lyrical, and stillness. Each rhythm pertains to a different way in which we move, express, and understand ourselves. By dancing these rhythms we allow our bodies to be danced, step out of our heads/ego, and enter into a meditative state of being. The dance is a physical, emotional and spiritual curriculum that systematically leads us to retrieve the instinctive movements of body, heart and mind. This is a drug and alcohol free practice.

BARRE

STRENGTH
Intermediate

Barre workouts are held in our 2nd floor studio and classes incorporate exercises done at a ballet barre and a mat; the method combines with elements of ballet, Pilates, and yoga. Barre exercises rely mainly upon one’s bodyweight for resistance, (thought we do use dumbbells and therabands) and the moves challenge your core stability and balance. Barre workouts are designed to help an individual achieve a “dancer’s body” — strong, sleek, and streamlined.

Gyrokinesis exercise builds a strong, flexible body with a focus on improving the full range of motion in the spine. Class focuses on repetition, flow, breath, and using your own body’s spatial awareness and resistance. The exercise sequences promote a decompression of the joints, which leads to a pain-free and happy body. You address stability through principles of opposition, fluidity, and mind-body connection. You will feel stronger, taller, more alert, and more mobile with each session.
